NEWS ITEMS OF THE WEEK
SHELTON BENJAMIN INJURED, WWE RETURN CANCELLED In what appears to be a huge blow for the SmackDown Live brand, Shelton Benjamin will no longer be returning to WWE after all of the hype, Due to a severe injury to his shoulder. Shelton announced this on his twitter with the following statement: "I am both disappointed & sadden to announce that due to a serious injury to my shoulder I will not be returning to WWE at this time. For now I will have to put pro-wrestling to the side as I prepare to undergo surgery to repair my torn rotator. This comes as a shock to me as i am no stranger to performing while in pain yet I had no idea of the severity of my condition Thank you WWE for helping me discover this situation & for giving me an opportunity to return. I will be back. For now I must refocus my energy on repairing my body and mind." ZACK SABRE JR AND KOTA IBUSHI ARE NOT WWE BOUND After what seemed like a guarantee signing, Both English wrestler Zack Sabre jr and Japanese wrestler Kota Ibushi will not be signing a WWE contract anytime soon, As both have said of other goals they wish to fulfil outside of the WWE. Regarding Sabre personally, The Wrestling Observer noted that "almost all indications" point to Zack Sabre Jr not signing with WWE for the time being. And regarding Ibushi, He has been telling people in Japan that he hasn't signed with WWE, and pointed out that he didn't say that "he won't sign." TOMMY DREAMER NOT GOING TO WWE WWE recently attempted to sign former ECW and TNA star Tommy Dreamer, To help fill the thin rosters of WWE. Dreamer said the following about the rumoured return to WWE: "Rumours are true. They kind of grouped a bunch of people together and, so far, a lot of those rumours have come out. Yes, WWE has reached out to me. I was actually scheduled to be at the Draft and then, Dreamer's travel subject to change, they switched it on me. The week before, I was there. They were in Michigan. I was visiting my family in Michigan. On a lovely 23 days on the road, I got to see my family for halfasecond in Michigan. They've offered me a contract and I really have so many commitments to my own company as well as the charities and to other shows, I can't sign a contract. And I told them I will do just like I did with the Wyatts, in the sense of I was not under contract when I wrestled that whole time back in WWE. I love WWE, but I just can't sign a contract right now. My life, and I can't give up on my own company, so I basically had to say 'Thank you. If you want me to come in, then I will do the best to my abilities in all that I do, but if not, that's cool. Hope we can still be friends'. So that's where we're at. I don't know if it's the right decision. At times, I feel like it's the closing days of the eighties, when the territories are coming at you, but I don't think I made an enemy with WWE. It's just I can't give up on my dreams. I have a strong following with House of Hardcore. I can't give up on that… I can't give up on my commitments and, to me, I think it would be better for everyone to get along." WRESTLER INTERVIEWS
ETHAN CARTER III On PopTV relationship with TNA: "It's poppier. There's more colour – it pops off the screen. It's been great and it reflects in the product. Everyone is banding together. The difference is the approach in the locker room. Many are groping for opportunities after spots have opened up from people leaving. People have been chasing to get their name out there, get noticed, and deliver. I think a lot of guys have stepped up that and done that. I don't want to say it's a rebranding, because the company has been through enough re-branding and re-starts, but it's a damn good product that's been solid and only going to keep going as long as we keep putting that effort." On the current TNA product and its direction: "We have an innovative product and I think we're on the right track with consistently good television that isn't insulting to your intelligence. Continuity, stories, character progressions. People doing things within reason. Wins matter, losses matter. Titles matter. I think we have to keep building upon what we're doing now but not wrestling in the laurels because we're getting a bit of good word of mouth. We need to keep progressing." On his Success which he has achieved in TNA: "I was kind of the catalyst for the direction they were trying to go in by building homegrown talent, building new stars. I was very fortunate in that opportunity and hopefully delivered for them. I just want to be the best…I don't worry about accolades as much as I worry about just doing better. I'm not surprised by it; I'm just surprised that the opportunity came about from where I came from and what I've been through. I knew I could do it and someone had faith in me and I thank them for having that faith. I was in the game for a while without any real results and I stuck it out and it's rewarded me greatly." On when his current TNA contract expires: "January of next year [2017], I believe." On former TNA wrestler AJ Styles: "He's a world class talent, he's awesome. I'm always happy for other people's success. He's out there accomplishing another aspect of his career. He was TNA's MVP for a long time." VAMPIRO On why he doesn't watch pro wrestling anymore: "I don't watch it as a fan anymore. Now, I watch it as, when we were rehearsing, when we were going over this, and I sat at home for three weeks trying to think of how to help you tell the story. And I'm sitting there and I see that you listened to me, then I'm into it. If you're just going to go out there and you brush me off, and you look at me, and you just kind of do flipping and flying, it doesn't do it for me. It doesn't do it for me. if there's no logic, brother, if you get a beautiful Barbie doll girl, is that really going to turn your crank for the rest of your life or do you want somebody with some grit, some scar tissue, some experience? It's the same thing, right? Experience. Somebody who can kind of move you and compete with you and hold your curiosity and sometimes make you want to be a better person. Wrestling does that to you. You go to wrestling because you want to be a wrestler. You want to get rid of your stress. You're a fan. You're freaked out. You like the energy. But if it's just put together like a video game, it's like, 'what are we doing here?'" On the problem with Pro Wrestling today: "I think the biggest thing that the kids are making, when I say 'kids', the younger people, are making, boys and girls, men and women, are you're going too fast. You're too quick. You punch a guy six time and before the fans can say that they've digested. You've already kicked and spun kicked and done a moonsault and you've kicked out. You don't sell the chair shots and you're back. Everything you just did, junk food, man. f**king waste. You just wasted all that talent. You didn't tell a f**king story. And I think that's the point." On Wrestling again: "I'd like to, just because he's my friend and I respect him so much, but I wouldn't do it because I would embarrass him. He's too good. Johnny Mundo. I'd like to be in the ring with him just because he's so f**king good. But I wouldn't do it because I would look bad. He is just on another level. PJ Black, I'd like to work him just because we're old school guys and it would just be a good vibe, man. I'd love to do a job for a new up-and-comer and I'd like another program and give somebody the launching board they need to go. I could do it with anybody, man." BRET HART On Seth Rollins, whom he says had a "mega mega push", and his injury to John Cena's nose. Bret says Rollins is one of the wrestlers today who has lousy execution: "He knees him the face so hard, and so recklessly, and so dangerously. He could easily kill somebody with a knee like that to the face." Bret later wonders what if Seth Rollins killed Cena right in the ring that day. "It's a testimony to John Cena. A, he finished the match and b, that he didn't get a shotgun and shoot Seth Rollins when he came through the curtain." Bret says in his day you couldn't make those kind of mistakes. Bret compares Cena's nose injury and its recklessness to one of his own: "Bill Goldberg kicked me in the head and ended my career because he didn't know what he was doing. You get guys that cost me millions and millions of dollars, cost me my career, probably led to my stroke, and so many things that happened all because somebody didn't know what they were doing." Bret blames the mentality, claiming wrestlers like Goldberg injured their opponents but still received applause backstage. Bret does not question Rollins being a top star, rather he questions his abilities. "The best wrestlers don't hurt anyone for real." "I wrestled 23 straight years all over the world. The safety of my opponent was critical to me."
Bret says Rollins was also tough and hard on Sting. "[He] did things to a guy that kind of ended his career a lot faster." Bret says it was disrespectful and you need to take care of a guy like Sting in the ring. Bret blames the new fast pace and style in wrestling today. Bret says people like Stephanie and Shane McMahon don't understand sport injuries. "They don't understand that when you do these kinds of things, you can kill somebody." Bret continued, "It may look great but you really need to think twice with what you're doing."
Bret Hart agreed with Cody Rhodes' sentiments about WWE Creative and the writers. Bret thinks there is too much talking and everyone sounds the same. "If you watch wrestling like I do, you watch for the wrestling. There's so much talking. There's some 'twit' back there with a pencil behind his ear writing down all these things for wrestlers to say." Bret continued with his displeasure, "It all starts to sound the same" and "I switch channels as soon as I hear someone going into a big monologue."
Bret criticised the writers creating of the Stardust gimmick. On the writers, "They are wrestling fans but they don't understand wrestling. The only way they can understand wrestling is to be a wrestler and that's not going to happen." Bret later praised Cody Rhodes' wrestling ability. "Somebody writes down a bunch of lousy things for you to say and it comes across flat, it's not your fault." Bret compared promos today to the past, where in his era you owned what you said. The current dialogue is not "from your own heart", as Bret put it.
Bret said the writers give wrestlers a script during the day to remember and then a few hours before show time they change the entire thing. "They come up to you at six and say it's all changed. Here's this, you gotta remember this now." Bret claimed he has seen guys like John Cena remember pages and pages of material. Bret doesn't know how guys like Cena do it, claiming "it's hard to do."
