- The News ROUNDUP (JANUARY) -
Japan steals the WWE Royal Rumble! As Shinsuke Nakamura and Asuka won their respective Rumble matches to earn title shots at WrestleMania 34. While not victorious, several other stars of WWE's illustrious past returned for the Rumble matches, including; Rey Mysterio, Lita, The Hurricane, Molly Holly, Beth Phoenix, Jacqueline, Nikki Bella, Brie Bella, Vickie Guerrero, Trish Stratus, Michelle McCool, Kelly Kelly and Torrie Wilson. Then the huge debut of MMA superstar Ronda Rousey, who after the Rumble match was won by Asuka, made her presence known with a stare off with the Rumble winner, Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss and Stephanie McMahon. Ronda wore to the ring the jacket of her friend and favourite wrestler, the late 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper. Following the Rumble appearance, Rousey was revealed to have signed on the dotted line to a multi year full time contract with WWE. Jonathan Coachman has also signed a deal with WWE which will see him return to the Raw announce table alongside Michael Cole and Corey Graves. Ethan Carter III is WWE bound once again. EC3 made his NXT TV return sitting at ringside at NXT's Takeover: Philadelphia event on the Rumble Weekend. Also at ringside were Trevor Mann aka Ricochet and War Machine (Rowe and Hanson). ■ The now former Cruiserweight Champion Enzo Amore is fired from WWE amid a rape allegation. Top women's star Paige is finished in the ring, and the 25th anniversary celebration of RAW almost ended in riots. First off, The Cruiserweight champion Enzo Amore was alleged to have raped an unnamed woman on Monday, October 23, 2017, in Phoenix, Arizona. Official Police report from the Phoenix Police Department said: "On Monday, October 23, 2017, at around 2:30pm, Phoenix Police responded to a local hospital for a call of a sexual assault that had reportedly occurred on October 19, 2017 at 401 West Clarendon Avenue. This case is under investigation." Since this news was made aware, WWE suspended Enzo pending the the conclusion of the investigation, Then would not long later actually fire him. Saraya-Jade "Paige" Bevis has been disqualified from working in a WWE ring again due to her latest injury she suffered on 28/12/17 when she took a stiff kick from Sasha Banks to her back. Paige's neck and back injuries are so bad that WWE doctors have not cleared her to return to the ring. Then came the WWE's 25 year anniversary of it's longest running show, Monday Night RAW, which was split up into two shows, One half of the show at the Barclays Center and the other half in the infamous Manhattan Center, where the first ever episode of RAW originated. While things weren't good in the Barclays Center, It was certainly better than what the fans at the Manhattan Center witnessed, as most of the 3 hour show was looking at a video screen, with only a handful of new segments and a couple of matches, which fans made clear they weren't happy with as chants of "refund" and "bull****" echoed around the legendary building. ■ CWF Mid Atlantic Wrestling on 07/01 fired longtime booker Brad Strutts due to inappropriate behavior. ■ WrestleCon just got bigger! The 'Hitman' Bret Hart, 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair, 'Cowboy' Bob Orton and the 'Bad Guy' Scott Hall join the already huge star studded line-up of over 60 stars of the sport from The Steiner Brothers to Gail Kim. Also joining the list are Tenille Dashwood, Brooke Adams, Francine, , Gail Kim, Lanny Poffo, Will Ospreay, Daffney, Hardcore Holly, D'Lo Brown, Christy Hemme, Velvet Sky, Larry Hennig, Rosa Mendes, Madison Rayne, Winter, Penta 0M and John Cena Sr. ■ ROH has new Championship belts for the World Tag Team, Six Man Tag, World Heavyweight, World TV and the all-new the Women of Honor championship. ■ Brian Pillman Jr. made his in-ring debut on December 31, 2017 in Indianapolis in a victory over Jonathan Wolf. ■ Chris Jericho returned to New Japan Pro Wrestling on January, 4, at WrestleKingdom 12 in a no DQ match loss to Kenny Omega. Jericho in a class act dedicated the big match to his forever friends Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit, who also made big names for themselves in New Japan. ■ Emily Dole, who wrestled for the GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) wrestling promotion in the 1980's as Mt. Fiji passed away on January 2, at the age of 60. We send our condolences to the Family, friends and fans of the iconic star of the much loved series. ■ Cody, Nick Jackson and Matt Jackson have announced the date for their 'All-In' wrestling event. The show will take place on September 1, and scheduled for the card is Kenny Omega. The event, which is being paid for by Cody and The Bucks is hoping to get a attendance figure of 10,000 paying customers. ■ Ed Nordholm and Matt Hardy have buried the hatchet over the past years feud over rights to the Broken gimmick. Impact Wrestling and Twitch have announced a new working relationship, which will see exclusive content taped for the service. The company is back in the four sided ring business again following the new direction. On the topic of new management, Don Callis has revealed that Impact is expecting more departures to come but is not worried about them as they are bringing in new talents to replace them. Callis, who appeared on Killing The Town podcast said that the first set of taping's are just the beginning of the new vision, and states fans must be patient. Hania The Huntress, who debuted at the January Impact tapings, was suddenly fired from the company after she apparently refused to lose to a Knockout in under two minutes, as well as showing up late to work. ■ Samoa Joe suffered a Plantar Fascia rupture in his foot on 08/01 episode of Raw. ■ World Wrestling Network's Gabe Sapolsky has signed with WWE as a consultant. Reports indicate that Gabe will continue his work with Evolve and WWN and sees this as a growth in the relationship with WWE. ■ On 15/01, NWA taped an Empty Arena Grudge Match between Tim Storm and Jocephus with Storm's rematch with the NWA World Champion Nick Aldis on the line. The match was taped in the Impact Zone in Orlando, Florida. ■ Former Knockouts champion Sienna and Eddie Edwards we're hospitalised during the Impact tapings when Sienna suffered a collapsed Lung, whilst Edwards suffered several cuts, a broken nose, and possible concussion from a botched baseball bat attack from Sami Callihan. ■ RELEASES AND SIGNINGS: Ethan Carter III, Ronda Rousey, Ricochet, War Machine's Hanson and Raymond Rowe and Candice LeRae have signed with WWE. Chris Adonis, Ethan Carter III, Hania the Huntress and Bobby Lashley released from Impact Wrestling, While Austin Aries, Father James Mitchell, Scott Steiner, Tommy Dreamer, Brian Cage, Su Yung and Gamma Singh have signed with Impact Wrestling. Kenny Omega has re-signed with NJPW. ■ The XFL is to return to the field in 2020, as announced by Chairman of WWE Vince McMahon. The second time attempt at ruling the Football field is to be a "fan-centric, innovative experience, including shorter, fast-paced games and a family-friendly environment, complemented by cross-platform viewing options and real-time fan engagement." ■ WWE's Samir Singh, Alicia Fox and Epico are all out of action with injuries. Epico is out for a shoulder injury which he underwent surgery for on 30/01. While Epico has not been on WWE TV of late, He and Primo have been working house shows over the past few months. NJPW's Hiroshi Tanahashi is out of action due to acute osteoarthritis in his right knee. ■ It didn't take long for the dust to settle as WWE's limelight is well and truly glued on new signing Ronda Rousey. Countless reports coming in suggest that the women's locker room are not happy with how the women's Rumble match is being ignored because of Rousey. The first Raw following the Rumble never even featured an appearance from the MMA legend, yet the entire women's segment was dominated by talk of Ronda and what She thought of the Rumble match. Nikki Bella tweeted in response to WWE asking for Rousey's thoughts over those who were actually in it: "Wonder what all the 30 other women candid thoughts were too?." Nia Jax also tweeted "Cool she’s here....I guess 30 women making history can just be forgotten." Sasha Banks would also respond in unkind fashion; “I have nothing nice to say so I can’t say anything at all” While Rousey's debut was huge news and garnered millions of youtube hits, The return of Lucha Legend Rey Mysterio garner twice as many views reaching 6.4 million hits. ■ WWE have followed up with the announcement of the first ever Women's Elimination Chamber match on the 25th of February. As this years Chamber event will be a Raw exclusive, Alexa Bliss will be the one defending her title inside of the chamber. ■ Those damn Dudleys are joining Goldberg in the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2018. ■ Rockstar Spud made his WWE debut on 30/01 as 205 Live's new General Manager. Spud will now be known as Drake Maverick. ■ Mainstay of Impact Wrestling/TNA Jeremy Borash has departed from Impact and has signed with WWE. It is believed that Borash will be helping with Matt Hardy in his Woken work. Borash was backstage on Royal Rumble weekend, and was in on the production meeting for the NXT Takeover: Philadelphia show.
- EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW w/SHAUL GUERRERO PART 1 -
Through The Ropes' Jack Williams interviewed the leading Lady of the new generation of the legendary Guerrero family, Miss Shaul Guerrero!
JW: Through The Ropes is proud to present to you the talented and beautiful Shaul Guerrero, For the younger readers who may not have seen you, Could you please introduce yourself?
SG: "Hello everyone! My name is Shaul Guerrero. Many of you may know me due to my pedigree of being a Guerrero- one of the largest and most recognizable wrestling dynasties ever. My father was WWE Hall of Famer Eddie Guerrero. My mother is Vickie Guerrero and I am related to many more recognizable and talented Guerreros such as Chavo Jr., Chavo Sr., Hector & Mando Guerrero and Mexican legend Gory Guerrero. I also have my own accomplishments in the wrestling industry. I was the longest reigning Florida Championship Wrestling Diva's Champion and simultaneous holder of the Queen of FCW title. I was a frequent character on FCW TV and NXT when it was born. I managed many talent you see today on Raw and Smackdown! and announced for Smackdown! Live."
JW: The Guerrero family and wrestling go hand-in-hand, but when did you first get into wrestling and how did it happen? SG: "I first got into wrestling when I was at Summer Slam with my mother several years after my father passed. John Laurinaitis took notice of me and offered me the opportunity to attend a tryout camp for WWE. It truly threw me back that I was even considered. I never thought I could be beautiful enough or strong enough to be in the ring with these women I looked up to so much. But, I took that opportunity and never looked back the moment I hit the canvas for the first time. That tryout camp was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life and I feel so blessed to have even had the opportunity."
JW: Who were your main influences in Wrestling apart from Family members? SG: "My main influences in wrestling really were only the women I saw and knew in WWE in the beginning. I wanted to be Melina or Michelle McCool so badly. However, when I was starting to train, besides studying my father like a hawk I truly loved Kurt Angle, Edge, Lita, Trish Stratus and Alundra Blayze. Norman Smiley turned me onto Japanese wrestling as well and Bull Nakano was my absolute fave. Today, there is something to learn from everyone and I am just now really looking into the Indy scene more on the regular. However, I have always loved Sara Del Rey and Serena Deeb."
JW: At only 27 years old, You have so much time to be able to craft your own legacy in the wrestling business, Do you have any plans on continuing wrestling? SG: "I do have plans to continue in the wrestling business! I am currently taking bookings as an announcer, backstage interviewer, commentator and manager/valet. I am also training again as of January 2018 and am loving it. I truly want to get back to being an in-ring competitor but I hate to say that it is contingent on how well my neck holds up."
This fantastic interview continues in the next edition of the Through The Ropes Newsletter (March 2018).
