On Joey Ryan / Why Wrestling Should Stay Serious

Written By: Jack Williams | Date: 28/10/2019

Born Joseph Ryan Meehan, on November 7th, 1979, The man who'd go on to be known as Joey Ryan would go on a journey through the pro-wrestling business unlike no-other before him, or since him. One day in a failed 15-year career turned Ryan's career around when he used his penis to throw a wrestler in a match. Ryan changed his career forever. He was no longer trying to be a successful and serious wrestler with a sleazy gimmick, He was now an unfunny comedy act that appealed only to the low IQ section of society, and made the rest of his compadre's in the wrestling profession look like s**t.

Fans will defend the move stating that it is over and that wrestling is supposed to be fun, But they don't realize why wrestling became fixed and made into entertainment in the first place. Wrestling became scripted without fans' knowledge so that the matches would become more entertaining. The people saw two equals who had an equal chance of winning instead of a one-sided dominance that many matches used to feature [namely Goerge Hackensmidt, who'd finish his opponents with ease]. Whilst the matches became scripted, The wrestlers [or fighters] didn't take it any less seriously, as the people had no clue that anything had changed and that the matches were real.

Then some decades later, it became common knowledge that wrestling was fixed and scripted, which led to a hit in its respect and legitimacy. But still, The wrestlers kept on plowing effort by the barrow-load into their craft, which helped retain some of the lost respect as the risks were still real.

Now, only decades after wrestling became known by all as fixed, ONLY NOW, Do some fans and even wrestlers of today's generation think that wrestling should be treated as an art form, as it's scripted and has aspects of the entertainment industry involved [IE showmanship, connections to the audience and direction]. The reason for wrestling becoming more entertainment orientated was for better matches, not so it can be viewed as an art-form, not so talentless failed pro-wrestlers can do things that are just no physically possible so they can earn a buck or two, or doing silly childish gimmicks, Wrestling, whilst fixed, was and is still supposed to be a competition sport, where the combatants involved are aiming to walk away with a win. Why would someone who wants to walk away with the bigger purse, the victory, and to advance closer to earning a title shot, want to risk losing the match to do a comedy spot, then go back to being serious and trying to win? It's a fourth wall break and one that makes the rest of the show look pathetic [unless you cut it out by fast forwarding].
