BEFORE THIS TURNS INTO AN anti-Cena article, let me just say that I have been vastly impressed with Cena’s run as WWE United States Champion. Now let’s be real. The year is 2015. Ten years after Cena won his first WWE Championship at WrestleMania 21. Should he really be defeating a young future top star who is currently in his first reign as WWE Champion, and has just completed his first full year as a singles competitor on the main roster? The answer is no.
Not if WWE are looking to build future stars. There is currently a drought of truly established main eventers, hence why John Cena is back in the World Title picture. Back to default. Let me clarify this is not about Cena winning that sixteenth World Title, this is about the future of the WWE. Let’s say Cena defeats Rollins, where does he go from there? There are no top heels left. Rollins is currently the top heel in the company, and losing the Title now to Cena would lead both to a dead end.
Now let’s say Rollins defeats John Cena and retains his Championship. He will be established, having beaten the most legitimate star in WWE. Of course, KEVIN OWENS did this back at Elimination Chamber, but that was thrown away as Cena gained his inevitable revenge, dropping Owens into the mid-card and killing his momentum as a top heel. Much like what happened with RUSEV and BRAY WYATT. We use that word “buried” an awful lot, but you can not deny, WWE are not building new stars because they have John Cena beat them all. Rollins must secure WWE’s future with a victory.
